NATO
In 2006, NATO member countries agreed to spend at least 2% of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on defense each year. This goal was set to ensure the Alliance's military readiness. The decision was made in response to: Russia's annexation of Crimea and Instability in the Middle East
The 2% guideline is one of two defense spending guidelines agreed upon by all NATO member nations. The other guideline is to spend at least 20% of military expenditure on new equipment
In 2014, NATO members reaffirmed their commitment to the 2% goal. NATO expects 23 of its 32 members to achieve the target level of spending on defense in 2024. The 2% and 20% thresholds are public thresholds, and are affirmed as a floor, rather than a ceiling
Canada has not reached the 2% benchmark. Some say that the federal government would have to double military spending to meet the NATO target
